Denial is mask—
It grins and lies—
Even when the truth stares you in the eye—
It controls our thoughts and even our smiles—

It possesses the action of human guile—
It hides the reality that lies beneath—
For a mask is a master of deceit—
It conceals a secret in the dark—

But one cannot hide the truth from the heart—
Life is not a masquerade—
The truth one day will be displayed—
To the one who wears the mask.

The author's comments:
I was always intrigued by masquerade masks and the 'secrets' they held beneath the surface. It dawned on me one day that denial is very similar to hiding oneself beneath a mask. Denial of what, you may ask? Well, anything. As humans, we hide so much from one another and live in fear of what others might think. We're afraid of the truth. But, again, life isn't a masquerade, and in the end the truth will always surface.
