Behind Closed Doors.
Behind closed doors, we sit and we hide.
We confess our deadliest sins to ourselves
And punish ourselves for our regrets.
Behind closed doors, we expose ourselves.
We allow ourselves to be completely stripped of everything we use to hide.
And we tell ourselves, this is good. We’re finally being ourselves.
But we cover ourselves up again when we go outside.
Behind closed doors, we sleep and we wake.
Asking our nightmares to politely leave
And to please shut the door behind them
And we pray this will be enough
To keep them away.
Behind closed doors, we sin and we cry.
We whisper to ourselves, It’s okay, we’re alone.
And we give ourselves permission to do what we please.
Behind closed doors is where we die.
Some with loved ones gathered around us
Behind the closed doors of a death-stenched room.
Lying peacefully on our deathbeds.
But some of us are alone
With our demons gathered around us
And a loaded gun to our right
We say our goodbyes
And shut the door tight.
