His thoughts ate him alive.
Poison swirling in the back of his mind, chewing away at his brain.
His misfortune weighed him down, sunk him to the bottom of the aphotic abyss.

His deepest, darkest secrets threatened to slip out, break the chair of his anchor to allow him to swim freely——
but in the back of his mind they remained, constricting his throat like a snake, stealing away his very last breath.

This is such a great poem. My favorite line is the last: "but in the back of his mind they remained, constricting his throat like a snake, stealing away his very last breath". I also love how you described the negative emotions as a physical thing trapped inside his head. It's a very real interpretation of depression.
