I Am Scared
I am scared
Because one day
I could read the newspaper
(When I’m older and like newspapers)
And see something awful
(Because the newspapers are full of awful stuff)
And recognize the victims plastered on the pages.
I am scared
Because one day
I could walk a block down a street
(Because there are lots of streets where I come from)
And get pulled into some big black van.
I am scared
Because one day
I could have a kid
(As women are known to be capable of)
And that kid could ride a bike
(Because kids like bikes)
And crash into a tree.
I am scared
Because right now
I don’t control much
And tomorrow
(Since the sun just keeps on coming back)
I’ll control even less.
I am scared
Because today
I could die
(Because all mortals have to)
Without even finishing
What I was put here to do
(Because everybody’s got a purpose)
I am scared
But I’m also thrilled
Because I haven’t died yet
Or gotten pulled into a van,
Seen my future kid crash a bike,
Or recognized newspaper victims.
