Purple World

The sun’s in my eyes
The grass scratches my tender feet
Fingernails painted a shade of mulberry
Lovely lilac lilies adorn my palms
And in that moment I lived innocently
I lived in a purple world.

The sky is dark and stars dance too far off to see
My little purse clutched in my hands
A rich velvet dress the color of wine hugs my figure
And in that moment I lived thoughtfully
I lived in a purple world.

The sky is a bright crimson, set afire by the sleepy sun
The cool water sloshes at my feet
A bunch of us laugh and play in the magenta LED-lit pool
And in that moment I lived freely
I lived in a purple world.

The room is lit by fluorescent lights
A band plays music of the victors while parents sit proudly
I stand with my head held high, clad in a royal purple robe and cap
And in that moment I lived proudly
I lived in a purple world.

The lights are dimmed yet still golden
A saxophone plays soft jazz in the back corner
I stand in my best dress at the business meeting
And in that moment I lived wearily
I lived in a purple world.

The room is black
My love sits by my side, silently
I release my pent-up emotions and we hold each other
And in that moment I lived lovingly
I lived in a purple world

The sky is white and snowy
Months have passed, and I have settled down
In my arms rests a newborn in a soft lavender blanket
And in that I brought forth a new life happily
I brought forth a new life to a purple world.

The world is grey and wet
Many years have passed, and I am weak and tired
They hold my cold hands in their own warmer ones
And in that moment I gave my life, knowing I was loved
I gave my life to a purple world.

The author's comments:
The use of colors in poetry has always appealed to me. Purple, one of my favorite colors, is the main element in this poem. I wrote the life story of one girl, using the colors to describe small details of her life. The repetition of the color provides a sense of familiarity between different points in her life.
