Caution
When you’re one
You’re sheltered from everything
Put that down
Stay there
We’ll be right here
When you’re four
you’re warned to be careful
Look both ways
Buckle up
Don’t run with scissors
When you’re ten
you’re reminded to watch yourself
Look both ways
Stranger danger
Only with an adult
When you’re older
no one expects you to forget
and you don’t
But no one warns us
that we should look both ways,
and also right in between
Because the scariest monsters
are in our heads
and the most dangerous mistakes
are in our hearts
