from skin to core, outside in
the warmth seeps through
till it relaxes every muscle.
I lie, relaxed
when I feel the ground beneath my back
sighing in relief as it is
embraced, by the toasty earth beneath
soft and fitting to my very figure.
From somewhere not far
A sound reaches my ears,
Not unlike deep, calming breaths in its rhythm
in…

and out.

and out,
suggesting smooth, fluid movement.
As a passing wind caresses my face
I finally become curious, and
open my eyes to a
flash of turquoise water, more vibrant than anything I can recall but --
No.
It is gone.
I see just the blue curtains in front of me
waving in the breeze of the
window by my bed where I lay
still and unmoving as I will always be
and as near as I ever will be again to a beach.

The author's comments:
This poem is inspired by the similarly titled Spanish film, meaning "the sea within." The movie focuses on a man named Ramon, who became a quadriplegic following a diving accident on the beach. He still does frequent the beach, just not in a physical form.
