Don’t think about how the world affects you -
Think about how you affect the world.
This is the fundamental shift in her thinking.
Humans are hateful, and compassionate, and insecure
But above all, we are self-involved.

Man is the centre of his own universe.

If he can’t see the stars, he forgets them.
If he can’t hear the cry, he won’t help.
And if he can’t feel the heartache, he doesn’t understand.

Each man must learn to walk in another’s shoes.

You shouldn’t have to think about empathy.
You should allow empathy to guide your thinking.
When you see them defeated – use empathy.
If her heart is wounded – use empathy.
And if your kin should succeed where you fail – use empathy

Use it in the bad times, and in the good times too
So when I plead “hear me, see me understand me”
You will know why.

The author's comments:
This poem was inspired by an English assignment - to use repetition effectively in a poem.

I wanted to play around with different types of repetition and explore the ideas of self-involvement and empathy.

What I hope people will get from my poem is the message that it is important to keep the feelings of others in mind when you are successful, and when you fail.
