Don't Get Too Attached

It happened at once, but it slowly increased to be noticeable.
Her avoidance of him went from,
Not laughing at his jokes,
To averting her eyes from his questioning gaze,
And then finding reasons to leave,
When he had just arrived.
She never stated outright that she was angry,
Or hurt.

She stopped putting effort in their friendship,
Allowing it fizzle out completely.
Counting down the days till her departure,
She cut all ties that bound her here.
Binding her to this tiny town, where everyone knows you,
The girl walked away from the boy with
The sweet smiles and the bright eyes.

With silent tears, she laid awake.
Pitying herself for everything she had caused,
She knew the series of events was all her doing.
But she hated the bittersweet ending.
It was the feeling of cutting the ropes that bound you to your captor,
And nicking your wrists with the blade that freed you.
The morphine that soothed the inflammation -caused by infatuation-
Leaves everlasting scars on your heart.
What hurts more, being left by the ones you love, or abandoning them?

She made sure to leave herself an escape route.
Only intertwining herself into the web of entanglement enough
To experience the excitement of her town,
But far enough away to cut any ties without breaking any hearts.
Except maybe her own.
“The only thing more unthinkable than leaving was staying;
the only thing more impossible than staying was leaving.”
? Elizabeth Gilbert

How was she to choose between the life she had always known,
And the life she had dreamed of achieving?
She felt conceited to worry her departure might hurt someone else.
She worried about leaving her town worse than she found it.
With abandoned friends, and sentimental teachers.
Family members confused at her reluctance to stay any longer
Than what was required of her.

“Don’t get too attached” she said.
“I am leaving in four years and five months,
Without a second glance”
When he drew lines in the sand,
She turned around and walked away.
Because she was not staying too long.
And stating otherwise would only hurt more in the end.
