A Movement of Nonviolence
Poem in Honor of the Civil Rights Movement
Natural rights they have forgotten
In the will of man to hurt their like
Those that want to forget humanity
To hide their crimes of brutality
They stab it with their swords
Make it porous with bullets
Bludgeon it with blows
And burn it with their hatred
Till it lay still, a pile of ash
But like a phoenix it shall rise
To withstand their mortal blows
Not to raise a hand against its oppressors
For it does not seek revenge with violence
For it does not possess the brutality of beast
And they shall not stop it
In its quest for pure equality
In its spread of love
Its weapons are words
Words that reveal their wrongs
So let it be admired
For it alone shall stand
As they become but a sad memory.
