Warily

I lift my face to the endless
Sea of blue above,
Frosted over with a thin layer of clouds,
Broken, by a black shadow who screeches to a halt.
You stare at me; your beady eyes glisten of untold stories.
The intentions that do not need to leave your beak
Hang taut, like a rope
Stretched out for too many miles.
Silence, in this realm of you and me,
Cars roaring and children laughing
In a different dimension.
Then suddenly,
An expression of mischief and delight
Crosses your dark and guarded face,
You leap towards me.
In a frenzy of feathers, I feel,
Rather not see, your beak repeatedly
Dig into my shoulder.
Stop! I cry, twisting away from your
Nasty, knowing, naughty smirk.
In reply, you take flight,
The wind cradling your delicate wings,
And you finally desert me, only to
Find me again tomorrow.
I catch my breath, watching the
Silhouette of your body
Fade into the darkening sky.
You cannot talk
In a language that does more than ring in my ears,
But I hear your message clearly enough.
You do not torment me because I am human.
You seek to test the limits of my
Crippling fear, awaiting the day
When I will strike back and
Become a worthy foe
And defeat you, my dear crow.
