Happiness is not something you postpone for the future; it is something you design for the present.
-Jim Rohn

It’s a vortex,
from the outside it looks like a star shining bright in the midnight sky,
but from the inside it is a deep black hole that sends you to an alternate universe
where health and happiness are not necessities, but proper accessorization is.

It walks down the hall like it has nowhere important to go,
expecting the wind to blow it’s hair back so that everyone will stop, stare, and swoon.
But that only happens in movies.

It’s a lion that lets out it’s claws and hides in the brush waiting to pounce on the next innocent gazelle passing by that has unfortunately been placed in a box
labeled “poor” because their mommy and daddy couldn’t go buy them the iPhone 5 or hottest trend,
labeled “loser” because they chose not to date the oh-so-attractive jerks,
labeled “ugly” because they choose to look natural and not airbrushed,
or “nerd” because they actually try in school.
If the ever does gazelle escape
then it is left with battle scars on it’s soul.

It picks enemies and fires hatred from a cannon
scowling at everything that could bring them joy.
Laughing and aiming at what makes others unique
until their sparks of individuality and confidence are replaced by depression and fear.

It is fluent in many languages
especially cussing
followed by lying
and flirting.
It spits fire from it’s tongue about it’s different members
but face to face giggles with and loves them.

It barely makes it through life,
it cuts corners and receives daily doses of luck.
It gets detentions and has the courage to brag about it.

It thinks it has the crown,
the authority to mock and rule,
but all it does is make miserable lives for unfortunate people.
It chases it’s own tail instead of chasing what’s important.

The worst part is,
others sit and gawk at that star-disguised vortex.
They long to be part of it and fail.
They don’t see the dark clouds behind the rainbow.
They don’t see the evil behind popularity.

I understand not every popular person is like this, but there are always those few that are and yet people love them.

"I have great faith in fools, self-confidence my friends call it." - Edgar Allan Poe

It's hard to read long-ish poems when you're tired but what kept me alert was the vocabulary, metaphors, and comparisons. This is both modern and elequent. Good job.
