“Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass. It is about learning to dance in the rain.”

Wind slashes against my face,
I am numb.
Dark blue pieces of glass pierce my body,
A bitter breeze slithers down my skin.
Absence of the sun stimulates every hidden emotion,
Essence of my wings begin to unfold.

My tutu creases to the movement of my legs,
My feet morph into third position.
Like the grip of a python,
The silky lace of my ballet shoes constrict around my ankle.
My wings spread open into an arabesque,
The angel of my creativity escapes from inside of me.

An embodiment of grace and beauty,
I am Ballerina.
I am a dreamer,
A crusader of my incandescent fantasies.
I am a dancer,
An artist to the colors I paint onstage.

Secluded from the motions and whirls of the world,
The body of water serves as my only audience.
I embrace this solitude and the remoteness of my surroundings,
The world stops around me and my wings are set free.

The author's comments:
In my poem, “Wings”, I described the feeling of an isolated ballet dancer depicted in the painting “Ballet dancer, swan lake” by Sir Claude Francis Barry. As I wrote this poem, my goal was to illustrate the transition of an ordinary ballet dancer to a performer on stage.
