Everybody knows somebody in this little town that comes to mind
There’s a man who works all day long
then comes home to his family and says:

The declaration says that man can be free
that’s what our founding fathers meant it to be
men are created equal.
We come home to happiness
life and liberty.

He says to his son
people say
what you get is what you give

Remember there are people there
who are trying to take away.
Your freedom of a life,

When you move out son
you can be taken away
only by the shot of a gun.
And you’ll say

What happened to this country
I thought it was something else
Everybody said there was new opportunities
like a fountain of youth
But our country’s based on honor
integrity and truth.

There’s a little girl going to bed
she hasn’t heard what people are saying on the radio
about all the bad things that are in the world
that people that are getting hurt.

But her mom shut it off before she heard
so she wouldn’t know.
She was so innocent why should she know?
It hasn’t happened here it never will
Good night sweet dreams.

Yesterday her daddy got shipped off to war.
He said don’t worry honey I’ll come back
soon

Few years later she found out the truth
what was on the radio,
she said, momma why didn’t you tell me?
and she said, I didn’t want you to know.
You were so innocent
why should you know?

What happened to this country
I thought it was something else
Everybody said there was new opportunities
like a fountain of youth
But our country’s based on honor
integrity and truth.

Next day a man came to her door in uniform,
he said don’t you remember me.
I’m your father honey,
I had two hearts one for you and one for me.
I never wanted to leave but I had to fight for someone else
So that people could be equal and people could be free
it’s what our country’s made of life, happiness and liberty.

To tell you the truth I thought
What happened to this country
I thought it was something else
Everybody said there was new opportunities
like a fountain of youth
But our country’s based on honor
integrity and truth.

I’m blessed to have these things
that some people don’t have.
And I wondered what I could do
to make a chance
for someone else to live the way I do,
With family, love and opportunity to.

I don’t think what could’ve of happened
or thinking it was something else.
There new opportunities
Cause our country based on honor,
integrity and truth
And everyday when I wake up,
I think what could I do.
