sweet sixteen
the dull, repetitive process
 of going through the motions,
 textbook questions,
 with textbook answers.
 monotony.
 the headphones save me
from a cruel death of creativity,
 but it's barely enough
 to keep me alive.
 i'm waiting for something,
and then all i see is yellow,
 and green,
 with a purple ribbon.
the color rises to my cheeks
as they, in turn, rise with a mile.
 the roses materialize,
 breaking the monotony
 and reminding me i'm loved.
 now 16,
 and in love with the
 sweetest boy,
 i've ever known,
 who sends roses
 on birthdays
 with a note
 meant for me.
