When Silence Learns my Name
She creeps in my room at
night when its only me---
and the thoughts of what once
could have been.
She lingers, yet I can never
seem to hold her in my grasp;
just long enough to ask why
she keeps returning.
Her presence is inescapable---
atleast, that’s what it seems.
Her whispers, they make the
outside world seem so cold.
She encourages me to retreat
to the warmth and comfort of my bed.
I listen.
“I come to one and all,” she
reassures me, “you’ll learn
to love me.” Her words make
my stomach drop, yet I can’t
bring myself to protest.
I know the words she speaks
aren’t the truth, not entirely.
I’ll never be able to love her,
I’ll only get used to her company.

This is a hidden description poem about depression personified as a woman. I wrote this poem in hopes of reaching other potentially disordered youth and in an attempt to spread youth mental health awareness.
