My Cat Speaks for Me
“Why do you sleep so much?” She asked.
Well, I am only a cat.
A cat who sleeps all day
Is the one who hunts all night.
I hunt the one not smart enough to sleep,
But I’m the one who steals their meat.
“Would you like to play with me?” She asked.
For yes, I am a cat.
When serious, my whiskers always hang down,
But my ears are bright and alive.
I hear the ball you throw towards me
Before it hits the ground.
When you tickle me with feathers,
I hear the real ones flapping about.
“Do you like your new home?” She asked.
I’m fine with anything, I am a cat.
The box you give me from your gifts
Is a gift in itself to me.
I think of your home as mine
And would like to compliment you on its box-shape.
My favorite is the plants,
And because you did ask,
Yes, I’ve marked this as my home.
“Do I annoy you?” She asked.
From a cat, funny you asked.
You are a pain in the ass.
The food you leave me is always late
And my litter should be cleaned.
Those treats you gave me for Christmas are great,
But when will you give me those again?
You always move in your sleep,
Which is why I sleep by your feet,
But always end up on the floor.
“Do you love me?” She said,
A cat.
Yes a cat,
Shall show no love but to himself.
But after years outside,
And in the snow,
You’ve taught me that watching it is more beautiful.
Your TV shows are actually entertaining,
And I do enjoy your cuddles and pets.
So at the end of the day,
I’ll always say yes,
For your love, and my love returned.

Finding inspiration in the world around her, Brianna hopes people can relate to her work in a way that inspires them in their own lives. Her inspiration for this poem came from her furry friends, and knows about the deep bond that can come from pets, but where does an animal’s inspiration come from? If an animal could talk about their thoughts, what would it sound like? Writing this in her Creative Writing class, this poem is Brianna’s perspective on how a pet would speak about their human’s questions. Brianna resides in New York, NY, where her inspirations are endless.
