Love & Rain
We both say,
“I love the rain”
which may be true,
but you do not
love the rain as I do.
You say, “I love the rain”
yet you cower
under the awning
anytime she shows herself.
When you say, “I love the rain”
it is hard to believe.
You scowl when your clothes
darken with wetness
from the rain falling on you.
When I say, “I love rain”
I mean it.
I love the sound of it
splashing on a window.
The gentle tip-tap
on the thick glass.
I love the feeling
of a cool rain
on a summer day.
And the sound
of a thundering storm.
I love the sight –
rain running down
my windows,
lightning illuminating
the whole night sky.
We both say, “I love the rain”
but one of us hides
and scowls
while the other embraces it
and enjoys every aspect.
So, when we exchange
an “I love you”
I know what I say is true.
However, hearing it
fall from your mouth,
I think about
your “love” of rain.
