Excluded
Sometimes I lie awake wondering
What I am doing wrong
Perhaps it has to do with my muttering
Or my need to belong
I’d like to say I don’t understand
Why you make me feel this way
But the truth is at hand
I can see why every day
You don’t know how it hurts
I can’t always be strong
Nothing works
And I am only crumbling along
Cut me loose
To escape loneliness’s noose
I need a different light
So I’ll be on my own tonight

This free verse poem is inspired by the intense feelings of loneliness and hurt from being excluded. It takes place in the mind of someone deeply hurt by a close friend. My hope for this poem is to encourage others to seek to let go of hurtful relationships and find the joy that comes from loving one's own self.
