Hi there, friend! I’m a leaf named Kyle.

I’ve been around a while, and I’ve got guile

I look forward to a journey that’ll certainly be worthwhile,

So I can finally see the world for miles and miles!

I’ve stuck around my tree, but it’s gotten less crowded

When Wind shouted and many of us were outed

I pouted because Wind never lets me leave.

But things are different, our colors changing,

The trees are trembling and shaking, bonds breaking,

Wind taking my friends away.

But how I want to go, I want to be free

Gliding for eons, riding the breeze

Imagine the wondrous sights I’ll see…

So I wait for my journey, as day turns to dusk,

Trees turn to void, colorless husks

Skinny little tusks that thrust from the earth.

Strangely, now it seems there is no Wind,

Now I’ve been left to fend for myself

No time to spend with my friends Wind took.

But wait, what’s this noise, at this evening hour?

A murmur, a whisper, a gale? The power

of Wind has returned, and this time he brought Shower!

A torrent from the sky has come to devour!

Oh Wind, you fool! I say as I break

from the tree that until now refused to shake

me free, now I’m drenched, Wind didn’t know what was at stake for me.

I plummet towards the ground, not the sky where I ache to be.

The sky gets darker as I barrel down sinking,

Feral Wind and Selfish Shower, what were they thinking?

It all fades to black as the light is shrinking…

But what is this cool and wonderful feeling?—I finally dare to peek,

Alas, I am floating not in the sky, but in a creek!

Finally, I have the adventure I seek — just not in the way I’d think.

So now I see this world from a different angle,

It’s gorgeous and colorful and sight-and-sound-spangled!

And just to think that all the while

I’ve dreamt of a life that wasn’t worthwhile

And now I ride, pleasant, carefree miles,

Just a curious leaf, a leaf named Kyle.

This is sort of a children's poem (which I say to justify the rhyme and the potential cheesiness) but I think the message is relatively introspective and universal. Let me know what you think!
