When the Castle Crumbles

The small footprints in the sand become unrecognizable

And the high pitched laughter slowly fades.

The magnificent castle that they spent years building

Is finally no longer.

They seem to grasp at the granules that once were glorious

But now lie on the ground in a state of sorrow.

Thoughts of pirates invading the moat

Swarm their minds in swirls of battles.

And right as they were about to defeat the captain,

They are ripped back into reality.

Where instead of castles and pirates,

They are faced with laundry and dishes.

And in the midst of all of their chores,

Their fond memories are being washed away

As quickly as the castle that has been deserted for years.

Wondering, how it is possible that their innocence is no longer,

They sigh, knowing that their dreams were for nothing.

And instead of becoming famous or a ballerina,

They are stuck at a desk, working in misery.

No matter how hard they might try to forget

They will never escape the time they spent

Building and digging happily.

This piece was inspired by my annual childhood trips to the beach with my family and how quickly you are forced to grow up so unexpectedly.
