Aviary

Dreams come as shapeless, shadowless birds

At night their feathers brush salient stories

That dissipate with each wingstroke

Before morning comes.

I wish I could catch them

Place each one in a wicker cage

An aviary for my fluttering dreams

Still, maybe it is better that I don’t.

I’ll keep their soft vessels unknown

And try to trace the currents

When each bird takes flight.

The author's comments:

The inspiration for this poem comes from my own dreams; every morning when I wake up my dreams from the night before always seem to be fleeting. I am also an avid birdwatcher, and the feeling of a fleeting dream feels like a bird that has sprung and flown off right before I could identify it.
