"Why is it that the words we write for ourselves are better than the words we write for others?" -Finding Forrester

To put it simply, Life is a game.

What game that may be varies depending on who you ask,

but the general consensus among the populous

is that Life is nothing more than a simple game.

A winner.

A loser.

Or maybe, in the end, no one wins.

It could be a gamble,

where you either have the cowardice to fold

or the confidence to keep betting.

Maybe it’s flipped.

Maybe there’s some confidence to folding away-

knowing you’ve practically won.

Maybe there’s cowardice scattered in the way one keeps the game going,

despite knowing you will be destined to lose.

For some, gambles are mad dashes for power,

or scrambles for control that will be pointless in the long run.

Monopoly is just another version of the art of gambling,

where you profit at the expense of others on the board.

It could be a tense match of chess,

where each move is one made with precision.

There’s always the question though,

of if you’re the most valuable piece on the board-

or if you’re nothing more than a pawn.

There’s a strategy to chess.

Move to this square here, capture this piece there.

Ruthless, when you think about it.

Your goal is to capture one piece

with the cost of all of yours.

It could be something as deceivingly simple as fifty-two card pickup,

where it’s all about speed.

It’s chaotic,

it’s wild,

and in the end it all boils down to just pure luck.

In its simple nature lies the fact that it’s unfair.

One person scatters the cards,

and another is forced to pick them all up.

It could even be a roller coaster in an amusement park,

where once you are on any attempts to get off are futile

until it ends.

Where the track twists

and turns

and flips you upside down against your will.

Here, there’s not much you can do.

One set path,

one way to do things.

No way to deviate.

The thing about games though is that you can always play again.

You can have another go at the ride.

Even if you lose a couple times,

that’s never permanent.

It’s the only way that Life can differ.

But like Life,

you have to know your way around the game.

It doesn’t matter if you win-

just know how to play.

A metaphor poem I wrote for a creative writing assignment! I got to thinking about how different games or rides could relate to Life and the aspects of it.
