Ambition Vs. Apathy
Ambition pulls me out of bed in the morning
Yelling in my ear
“Your alarm has already gone off 5 times!
You did not finish your homework!
You’re already falling behind!”
I shoot up, more alarmed than my alarm clock
And as I struggle to keep my eyes open
Like lifting 300 pounds with each blink
Apathy comes around
And gently rubs my back
And reminds me of the such soft sheets
That keeps me in their warm embrace
How could I leave just like that?
“You will always feel behind and stressed,
So why worry? Who cares!”
“Wise words, apathy”
I say as I lie back down.
Every morning,
And every night, it seems,
apathy and ambition fight
In the boxing ring.
Seemingly more, though lately,
apathy has seemed
Evermore appealing
And yet again, apathy has won the day today

Saba is a graduating high school senior. Schooling for the past year and a half (2020-2021) had been rough for her, and especially with online school, she daily had to make the choice to get up and join her Zoom class or continue to sleep. As for many students, rounding up enough motivation even just do her huge, daily pile of homework was a huge workout in itself. Despite the circumstances, she pushed through and will be attending Stanford University in the fall.
