nothings into somethings

during these past few endless days

where the sun has painted heaven on my cheeks

and the moon has tucked me in each night,

I have craved everything and nothing, all at once.

as i looked at the world through my window,

the glass fogged with my emptied breath

my breath that whispered stories to my reflection

stories of better yesterdays, of forgotten feelings that too often linger till' dawn.

the sounds of the nighttime forced my mind down unlit paths

where everything merged together,

where everything chaotically became one.

fear rang loudly, a constant clamor in my mind growing louder until loud was loudest

yet, when I looked through my window, the world grew silent.

the streets lacked grinning children humming sweet songs of childhood

they lacked springtime daffodils and unplucked honey suckles

begging to be mine.

it was surreal to notice the treasures of the world that had gone quiet.

to see the world stop in its tracks reminded me of the hidden exquisiteness of our world

that too often we take for granted

(the murmur of car engines and the gentle morning dew). (the coo of nightingales and the nods of strangers)

we fail to realize that there is beauty in this nothingness;

these empty streets and these empty daytimes.

we ought to appreciate this period of nothingness

while we still dream of somethingness.

for flowers continue to bloom even in the shade

I wrote this piece at the beginning of the Coronavirus pandemic in 2020. I was dejected, down, and tired of being in my house all day. Yet, I tried to find peace, hope, and joy amidst the so-called nothingness.
