Snowflake Freckles
There are snowflakes falling,
And they sort of look like the way your freckles
Dance around your skin when you are excited.
Like a flurry of joyful fresh starts.
Do you ever think about smiling like that?
How when we light our faces on fire with expression,
We sort of decide what we will look like in this moment.
Each grin exclaiming,
“This is who I am right now.”
And why am I talking about faces burned into brightness
When the snow is falling outside?
Like a flurry of joyful fresh starts.
I see you in them all.

I wrote this piece during our first snow of the year—before Halloween! Something about fresh snow feels romantic, and although I originally intended to capture the beauty of this storm itself, my pen brought me towards memories of new but familiar love, the exact feelings that come from the first snow.
