Loyalty, what does that word really mean?

Is it based on the definition

Or based on what we’ve seen?

Are we really loyal or is it just our cooperation

The word is thrown around like nothing

People can stand by you while they're with you

But when they're gone what will they say about you

It's all so frustrating the way people are loyal

I can tell when you aren’t really there

I can tell when you lie to my face and it’s painful

I know you because I took the time to care

Why are you so daring to test my friendship

When you just stare and wait for me to forget you

The lies just drip from your mouth

How can you say you are there for me when we both know you are not

I know how to be loyal but true

But the question is would I rather be honest and loyal

Or would I rather stand with you

The truth is I know which one I would do

But I also know which one I should do

I guess that makes me a bad person to

But I just want to stand with you

And have friends like you

And be like you

But I can’t stand up to you so I follow you

Even though I don’t want to do what you do

Something in me wants to be as popular as you

Something in me wants to just be accepted

That is why I stand with you

And follow your definition of loyalty

This piece is originally about a girl who just wants to fit in but also wants true friends. I feel kids around a certain age start having difficulty knowing who is a true friend and who isn't. Most of us just want to fit in and be apart of the crowd, but also have loyal friends. These days seem harder to have both, but which one would you really choose?
