“Live in the Now”
Live in the Now
Take it all in,
the serene beach in all its essence.
It’s calling you to not only look at it,
but to feel it, to be one with it.
Your eyes trail,
they peer over to an old couple.
“They look so happy,”
You think.
“I wish I was as careless and free as them.”
Wrong.
Next, as you hear the peaceful waves crash into the coarse sand,
You see two little boys laughing and playing with their bright cherry red pales.
“I remember what it was like to be young,”
You think.
“Remember when I had no expectations to live up to,
No goals to meet but to skip a rock twice in my quaint pond next to my house?”
No.
You can barely remember anymore.
Two seagulls fly overhead,
Squawking with their orange beaks.
They are perfectly in sync,
They fly with ease and float as if they were made of nothing but mere feathers.
Just below the seagulls,
A school of fish of all colors swim gracefully through the clear, shallow waters.
Blue pastels
Soft purples
Gentle yellows.
You can almost taste the colors.
Strawberry red
Grape purple
Leafy greens
Sweet yellows.
“I wish I was that beautiful and vibrant,”
You think.
Wrong.
You are vibrant.
You are beautiful.
You are old.
You are young.
Not only are you careless, free, happy,
But you are what you are now.
Not what you are going to be.
Not what you were.
You are on a beach, more free than you have ever been.

For this piece, I really tried to visualize how I feel when I’m on the beach, and how I could connect that to an important theme in life.
