The Winter Shamrock
My grandma told me
That Ireland-her home
Was a paradise of greenery
She would play in the clover patch as a small child
And search for the symbol of good luck
Four little green leaves
found in the springtime
But only the luckiest could find a winter shamrock
underneath the light dusting of snow lay the beloved sprout
A sign that spring would be coming soon

This poem came from my creative writing class. We were able to pick paint chip sample cards and use their titles in our writing. The vibrant green shades I chose made writing about a childhood memory easy. The colors were bright and playful and I decided to write about looking for four leaf clovers. This is a game/activity that most can recall or relate to which makes the poem even more universal. Whether you are middle aged or a young child now almost all ages can remember a time when they were in the grass searching alone or with friends for the good luck charm. I wanted to convey a tone of reminiscence and longing of youth.
