The Comfort of Home

Steam slowly rising from a lackluster pot in the kitchen,

Spreading the fragrance of chicken and carrots.

A blue, dripping umbrella leaning on the wooden door,

A puddle slowly growing underneath.

A small pencil with a dulled point lying on the kitchen table,

Resting near a tangled swirl of papers, books, trinkets, and envelopes.

The slow rumble of the washing machine in the basement,

The soft murmur of my parents

In the family room,

Bathed with quiet affection and the warm glow of the lamp,

The muffled sounds of my sisters upstairs,

The sweeping of a broom in the dining room

As my grandmother hums an old hymn,

How sweet the sound.
