Escape

I saw a white lily simple in form

It had beauty beyond comprehension

Plucked a petal to see if it would scream

Then another, until it was stripped bare

When I woke up I saw a butterfly

on my window, it danced in a frenzy

I pushed hard with my thumb

The entire weight of my body flattening it whole

I saw a white cat when I was driving

It lay in the middle of the road

What a beautiful cat I thought…

Its brains got stuck on my tire

My counsellor says I am getting worse

I shouldn’t tell him what I did today

How I strangled a rodent

And felt its life drain from my fingertips

I walked past my former high school last evening

“I am talent!” I yelled outside the entrance.

Everything behind the walls ignored me like they always did

not today I thought.

I feel the texture of the walls as I walk in

I see Mr. Bream’s light on in the corner.

“I was a genius” I yell to my Literature teacher

I will make him my first famous work of art.

My work will be published in all the newspapers

My face will be on the walls of the stations

I will be wanted...

for the first time in my life

A swim will help me escape reality

My muscles begin to tire

petals, rodents, cat brains, faces…

I swam too far this time

And there is no escaping
