"To sin by silence, when they should protest, makes cowards of men." - Ella Wheeler Wilcox

apathy for everything
dare i care for anything

for the toxic fumes killing the trees

and for the people screaming “i can’t breathe”
i sit and watch the revolution cave
empathy's but a foolish game

apathetic is the ground below
apathetic is the melting snow
empathy can be so tentative
shame that apathy lies in our representative

fighting for the world too late
as apathy conquers the state
care for nothing but yourself
care not for the gun on your bedroom shelf
apathy for schools shot up
empathy towards the corrupt
apathetic are the people
who refuse to just shut up

apathy as you watch destruction
but certain love can be such poison
say you care for every soul
but others defy your lord’s goal

admit that you only care
for those who match your ice blue stare
for those who wear your pale complexion
for those who share your aryan perfection

apathetic for the dying
they're not worth your time for crying
apathetic for the sick
look away and they'll go quick
apathetic for the hungry
that's a problem for their country
apathetic are their leaders too
apathetic eyes stare back at you

empathy you tried to show
but empathy soon lost its glow

people have hurt you every time
and you fell victim to apathy's crime

you saw this world was full of greed
and change was but a hazy dream
your voice alone could never be heard
not even if you joined the herd
of people who still cared a bit
about this world
and how it's split
you'll only waste your precious breath
adding noise to silent deaths

funny how we only find empathy
for those who fall apart on tv
it seems that tears on pretty faces
can cause revolutions in torn up places

but these marches and riots die out so fast
our fight for change will never last
nonviolence is useless
and violence is truceless
when apathy remains so vast

empathetic for the rich
celebrities who sing off pitch
about how the world's running out of time
empathetic for half a**ed rhymes

yet there's apathy for activists
who fight with nothing but their fists
and teeth and nails and all they've got
because they still have what we've left for rot
hope still reigns inside their minds
unfazed by senseless,
heartless crimes

power still runs through their veins
shielding them from stabbing pains
of knives and bullets tearing apart
the last bits of empathy inside their heart

air still flows inside their lungs
as they let out steady breaths in front of guns
as they scream along to chants for change
as they pray for the politicians' ears in range
as their voice booms out among the crowd
as they speak about being loud

enough for apathy to hear
their words of love loud and clear
lamenting and prosing on and on
they won't stop until apathy's gone

so why have we tuned them out
no matter how much they beg and shout
i guess we simply can't handle
feeling everything
over nothing
pain
over numbness
humility
over greed
compassion
over cruelty
love
over hatred
empathy
over apathy

oh, what a scandal.

The author's comments:

I wrote this piece out of anger towards the citizens of this country, both young and old, who have become completely numb to such horrid events that have been happening. It seems that every time something bad happens, people either ignore it or try to start up a debate while ignoring all the facts. Fifty years ago, a school shooting would bring just about everyone to tears. Now, we feel nothing. I think people are forgetting that real people are dying because of things that we can control. If we all took the time to at least try to put ourselves in the shoes of mourning friends and families, maybe we could learn to come together and make a change we can all agree with.
