Where Im From Reindition
I’m from the sunshine state blazed with diversity
I’m from a city of dirt roads and cracked concrete
Abandoned dreams and unsettled homes
Sacred souls and scared resources I’m from a family of internal war and division
A silence of the illnesses unknown
A psychological indifference too strong to fight
I’m from a household of struggle foods
The now so bland taste of flavor packets and breakfast foods for dinner I’m from a generation of judges and prosecutors
A closed minded generation separated by social norms and cliques
Outcasted due to my relentless fight to live and grow in a society who bans “weird”people I’m from a group of survivors so determined to live even though opposing forces were working against us
Defeated the weed that could have grown and spread ending our life
I am from the outskirts of death
Once property of the Grim Reaper until I decided to know who I am and where I come from
I’m from the sunshine state

This poem was directed toward the community and lifestyle I grew up in, but also exposes the black communities failure to acknoledge mental illnesses amongst ourselves and families. This poem is inspired by Where Im From by George Ella Lyon.
