The city was unforgiving
even the people's hearts were cold
her body was young and beautiful
but her soul was broken and old

the streets had become her castle for she was a princess despite the men
with every touch she forgot herself
becoming lost again and again

escaping often to a streetlamp
always thankful for the light
for it scares away the monsters
that creep and crawl at night

but the streets began to take their tole
as she slowly withered away
waiting for her prince
as the night consumed the day

those monsters lived in the shadows
and she would shrivel from within
every time hungry fingers
dragged across her skin

and her absent hero
did nothing to save her slashed wrists
she then came to realize
that there was no fairy tale twist
