Streetlight
Streetlight.
His fingers found the front doorknob…...
I never saw him again.
He gave us two soap dolls, a broken watch and chain, a pair of good luck pennies, and our lives.
We had given him-
Nothing.
Sad.
Streetlights winked.
Daylight.
It was summertime.
The man waved, and the children raced each other to him.
Still summertime.
Trudged down the sidewalk.
A man stood waiting, hands on hips.
Summertime.
Played, front yard.
Fall.
Fought on the sidewalk.
Fall.
Trotted to and fro around the corner.
Winter.
Shivered at the front gate, silhouetted against a blazing house.
Winter.
Walked into the street, dropped his glasses, and shot a dog.
Summer.
Children’s heart break.
Autumn again.
Streetlights.
Fuzzy.
Rain.
