Where My Roots Lie
I am from six or more hours spent in a car,
Just to see family
Those simple days spent sitting around,
Talking about nothing, but still everything at the same time
I am from a living Kitchen Nightmare episode,
Everytime we “wanted to try something new,”
Never truly “fitting” in your place during cooking hours
I am from long days spent working,
And evenings full of sports and comedy sitcoms
Sitting in the same chair for hours,
And just ending up staying the night there
I am from home cooked meals being
Freezable and coming from cans
TV dinners that you ate at the family table
And Hungry Man dinners you spent an hour cooking
I am from studying and playing sports
From “you’d only see her on the court or sleeping,”
Flip-flops to basketball shoes,
The only way to dress up
I am from going to the tanner everyday
And when it was closed, sunbathing for hours
I am from try anything once but
Give it up before the month ends
Always open
But never willing to work
I am from controversial music
to a controversial attitude
Known by everyone, in both good ways
and bad
I am the difference, the deciding factor, the swing vote
I am a mix of the good and the not so good,
the “little bit of everything.”
The copy cat, the last to the party, never the first
I am the youngest, the third child and…
I AM ME.
