The Story of Guy and Girl
Guy meets Girl.
Girl meets Guy.
Guy asks her out.
Girl asks why.
Guy says “are you kidding?
you’re as beautiful as can be.”
Girl says “there is just no way
that you could be talking about me.”
Guy says “honey listen
you are as radiant as the sun.”
Girl says “no, no - baby please
I am not the one.”
but she doesn’t look as pretty
with mascara running down her face
lately it has seemed like
she’s just all over the place.
because when Girl looks in the mirror
she doesn’t like what is there to view.
a self-confidence intervention
is for her long overdue.
Guy doesn’t understand
what causes Girl to cry
but every time she does
his love for her starts to die.
Girl
breaks down.
Guy
breaks up.
Girl…
realizes
that she cannot learn to love another
before she loves herself.

Low self-esteem is something that affects so many teenagers today. I see its effects my school, in my friends...even in me. I wrote this poem because I think many of us forget that the success of our relationships with others stems from our relationships with ourselves, and if we keep racing around seeking approval of others and "perfection," none of these relationships will be healthy. I hope readers can apply the lessons in this poem to their self-esteems and to the relationships in their own lives.
