Afterthought
We realized it very young that to them we were an afterthought.
The aftermath of two divorcees
The two they always forgot
At times they remember we exist, but usually only on holidays or birthdays then they shower us with gifts.
Or maybe when we're sick, or if we've done something to be proud of.
Other than that they seem to forget how to love
Oh but the other ones, the other ones are just perfect
The other kids can do no wrong
Because they're actually "worth it"
Oh what to do with a pair of two who know they're last in lie?
Nothing at all? Or give them a call?
Go out to eat once in a while. But who cares?
They're bottom of the barrel, we don't care to hear them whine.
But we don't complain, we don't put up a fight.
We just go about our lives knowing we have people to love, people to listen and people who are there every day.
The poof! Magically they text wondering how it's going.
When we know very well they're just guilty for being invited and never showing.
So this is for all the afterthoughts, the people who they seem to forget.
The people who get materials over love.
We're the guilt they'll one day forget.

This piece is something I wrote after a log talk with my siblings and cousins about a certain side of the family.
