inspired by the fear of being average.

How wicked, oh wicked is the girl that knows her worth. Confident, bold, and strong.

How wicked, oh wicked, is the boy that strays from standards. Compassionate, emotional, and kind.

How wicked, oh wicked is the one without a binary. They, them, and theirs.

How wicked, oh wicked, are the lovers of each other. She’s in love with her. He is absolutely in love with him.

How wicked, oh wicked, are the people darker skinned. Present, inspiring, and knowing.

How wicked, oh wicked, are those with diverged minds. Non-typical, complex, and special.

How wicked, oh wicked, are the different. The individuals, the unique, the shift in normacy.

I wanted to use a language that sounded old and dead to parallel, in a way, the modern topics in the poem, to help push the narrative that a lot of the discrimination these people face feels like it comes from people stuck in the past.
