Ode to Italia
Italia,
il mio cuore e la mia anima
the sparkling waters of your coastlines
the salty breeze that tangles my hair,
silken waves turned into ravelled chaos
the mountains of Amalfi
the Canale Grande of Venice
the rolling hills of Tuscany,
an aroma of lavender
sweetens the air
portandomi a casa
Italia,
il mio cuore e la mia anima
the cobblestone terrace
the magnificent il duomo of Florence
the Ponte Vecchio and the flesher
who once contaminated the Arno
the Santa Maria del Fiore and her vaulting
Giorgio Vasari and Federico Zuccaro
the saccharine of sugar
the ruins of Pompeii
the city of Naples
the colosseum of Rome
and the duomo in Milan
San Giovanni Damasceno’s stained glass
in a lonely place,
where the daylight is mellow and golden
portandomi a casa
Italia,
il mio cuore e la mia anima
grazie per avermi
portato a casa.
