They Get to Fly
Sometimes I like to compare people to birds,
not for our similarities but for our differences.
How much louder our footsteps sound,
when we are walking on the same ground.
How much heavier our feet fall,
each step the opposite of small,
while they jump, light as air.
No need to truly care.
They are so unburdened by the weight,
the human consciousness and all the hate.
Lighter than our 2 ton minds,
not constantly searching for what people try to find.
Untethered by the questions we are forced to ponder.
Only needing to sing and wander.
Unaware of concepts bigger than themselves,
while we are held down by the simple thought of self.
Wings unshackled by the chains of purpose,
not forced to perform in this impossible circus.
Most birds get to fly.
They leave the ground with no goodbye.
Rising into the cosmos and befriending the breeze.
And we are stuck amongst the roots of trees.
Maybe it is just because of anatomy,
birds have bones that are empty,
they were not created to be weighed down.
But humans are so leaden that we drown.
Either way we all secretly envy their gift,
how they are untethered,
because in some cases ignorance is bliss.
