The War is Over
Gifted to lead, I am merely a meek lamb myself, learning to shepherd countless lost sheep.
If the stars fall to the earth like sonic snow, like tears rolling down the severed sky’s cheek,
And if the future has gone nuclear, the days turn gloomier, and our lives reduced to computers,
Know I am a shield for cover until the end, protecting those who may not call me their friend.
I am a sword too. Hold my hilt, my hand, and we can defeat the darkness while saving the sinner.
With my armored body and knighted heart, I’ll help fight the evil in this mad, manmade winter.
I'll give them shelter, like you've done for me
And I know, I'm not alone, you'll be watching over us
Violence seemed to subside, still humans with pride, went outside, to continue the doomsday.
Though my arm, rusty, and my crest, cracked, I let them bring me into battle and we attacked.
I unsheathed my blade and courage against the immense imbalance, inequities, and inequalities.
Saintly, I slashed steadfast with savage passion abandon. You taught me who was my neighbor.
Then I cloaked the weak with my strong, silver quilt, held them close to my ribs and my vapor.
We’ve been processing and fostering our monsters since we began judging and condemning.
Losing my luster, I mustered a thirst to ceasefire first, with a sudden forgiveness from Heaven.
I could not hurt the enemy: my obligation in this simulation for salvation. Am I still a weapon?
I'll give them shelter, like you've done for me
And I know, I'm not alone, you'll be watching over us
In this war, I am both soldier and castle, but You did not call on me to incite Armageddon.
When faith, a firm monolith, withers from within, I’ll march on like cavalry in peaceful crusade.
My metal will safeguard vandal and victim. I’ll clothe and house both with selfless embrace.
I will defend them until my very last breath, when the world is a grave, and I am nearing death.
I will defend them in apocalypse and present now. What I’ve been equipped with isn’t in vain.
I will defend them until forced to lay on the ground for when You “fought”, You did the same.
I'll give them shelter, like you've done for me
And I know, I'm not alone, you'll be watching over us

!!!! The refrain is accredited to the enigmatic, yet poignant song by DJs Porter Robinson and Madeon whose music video and lyrics drove me to use it within my poem. !!!!
This piece is in the style of a BOP poem that I was inspired to write in my senior creative writing class.
Taking place in a supposed future where the world is coming to tragic, beautiful end, I am a knight armed with a sword and a shield trying to perform my duties as appointed by my Lord.
In the midst of the battles of life, I realize that I am not called to be a weapon of destruction. Although my God has gifted me with the strength and the tools to save the lost and fight against darkness, I was not instructed to war against my enemies and pick and choose who I want alive on my side. I am taught to love and protect everyone in my life like my Lord has done for me.
After this epiphany, I begin fighting for everyone through love and with love and promise to do so until I am forced to lay my weapons on the ground when my war is over just like Jesus did when He was on Earth.
