Courage
Courage
Kill the voice that is addicted
You are not supposed to feel
The pain that was inflicted
It’s no big deal
It’s been so many years
They won’t listen
It’s been so many tears
Remember how they glisten
I am a democrat
You are a republican
But it isn’t that
I want joy again
Women, listen when I say
You have a right to your emotions
You don’t have to speak right away
Get rid of all the wrong notions
Courage is a loaded word
It should be to persevere
To some it means to be heard
But it matters that the talking is clear

I wrote this from the perspective of Christine Ford. She may feel this way, or she may not, but it is no one’s place to decide how another feels. This poem deals with the backlash women have received over the years when waiting a long time to speak about when they were sexually assaulted by a man in a powerful position. Some women wait to come out about their assault for so many reasons, and there should not be judgement passed along to those women unless one knows the full story.
