The Girl
I know a girl
With mud caked over her calloused heels
As she runs
Through an open field of amber stalks.
I know a girl
Who leaves spider webs in her hair
Allowing the lacey strands to drape around her
Giving her a silken veil,
A halo.
I know a girl
Who eats meals with moss rolled up under her fingernails
Lime-green grass stains on her knees
And dried pine needles nestled in her hair.
I know a girl
Who summits mountains
Wind whipping her hair
And fog settling around her
She sings.

For two weeks out of the summer, I am lucky enough to attend a small summer camp on the shores of the beautiful Lake Squam in New Hampshire. The camp is so special as it only runs for those two weeks. For this period of time, I am surrounded by so many strong and brilliant women who inspire me to spread the camp's message of love and compassion. This poem I wrote about these amazing women.
