Ferrari
As I stroll about the silent room, listening to the rhythmic tap of my clean shoes on the pearl white tile, I notice something special. I walk around, immersing myself in the sights around me. Looking through the perfectly shining glass window, the sight of brand new leather is a mural to my eyes, a light tan, as that of the sand in the Sahara. It looks smooth, as if it was just cleaned. I stroll around, admiring every single minute detail, letting nothing get past me. The bright red paint is perfect, painstakingly applied by one lone man in Italy, with a perfect coat of wax glimmering on top, giving the metal a cold, soft feeling. I stare straight into the lights in front; the LED’s producing a bright fluorescent light which emits a sense of unmatched power and beauty all in one. Hundred of man hours were dished into this flawless masterpiece, with no detail overlooked. In the rear, small wings can be seen, meant to channel wind exactly where the designer wanted it. Polished chrome pieces and words are elegantly placed on the car, with the sort of artistic precision that 300,000 dollars buys you. I continue my walk. Everything is perfectly cleaned and shining, meant to look as appealing to the eye as physically and mentally possible. Nobody in their right mind would call it ugly. Nobody in their right mind would refer to it as anything except for perfect. I return to my starting point, to find the door left wide open. Knowing that this is a once in a lifetime chance, I waste no time gliding down into the seat inside, as if I was the owner. I felt like some sort of king sitting inside, the luxury surroundings making me feel as if I was one of the elite.
The second I find myself seated, the aroma of fresh leather hits my nose, the scent is like a “new car smell,” but better. If smells could be luxury, this one sure was. I shut the door. As I do, I notice the windows roll up, as they roll down a small amount when the door is opened, in order to clear the frame. The door emits a resounding “thump” as it closes entirely. I look around some more. The seats feature contrast stitching in red, matching the paint outside and complimenting the clean tan leather. The entire interior is done in an extraordinarily elegant manner, much like the exterior. Inside, every surface is made of leather, aluminum, or lightweight carbon fiber, which possesses strength similar to that of steel. It feels like I am inside of a fighter plane, a spaceship, a Formula One race car. Looking around, I subconsciously take in small, insignificant details, such as the small red lights blinking in various places, or the fact that the radio controls are angled toward the driver, or that the buttons have a certain “click” to them that can only be described as quality. There are two small LCD screens in front of me, next to a massive red gauge which counts the engine RPM’s, all the way to nine thousand. I continue to look around, and as I look over my shoulder, I notice a little red item resting on top of the other seat. I pick it up and look at it. It is a key. Not just any key, the key to this magnificent machine. It has a small horse on it, a logo found in many other places around the cockpit. There are three buttons on it. The paint on it feels soft, much like the exterior paint. I play with it for a bit longer, before setting it in my lap. I continue to look around, making mental notes of the locations of every little thing inside. I am immersed in every detail of the car, nothing else around me matters anymore, there is just me and the car.
Looking closer at the steering wheel, I notice the amount of craftsmanship that went into perfecting its functionality. The wheel is nearly one hundred percent carbon fiber. There is a small dial on the bottom right, which allows the driver to change the driving characteristics within seconds, even while moving. This is a feature derived from the decades of racing heritage and experience by the company. Slightly above the knob for altering the driving properties, there are the controls for the windshield wipers. On the opposite side rest the controls for the headlights and suspension settings. There is another black prancing horse on a yellow background, dead center on the wheel, a welcoming sight to see. At the very top, there are a series of LED lights that notify the driver when it is an ideal time to switch gears, once again a function derived from years of Formula One passion. To either side, the horn buttons can be found, perfectly integrated into the steering wheel, no need to waste any space putting them in the center, this car has to be different, it is special, unlike a Prius or a Camry this car is unique; it has a soul of its own. Below those, the buttons to the turn signals can be found. The wheel is extremely ergonomic, designed to allow the driver access to every necessary function without moving his or her hands. In the bottom left section, an “engine start” button is located. The button is bright red, almost as an indicator of what is to come when it is pressed. I pick up the key, and quickly insert it into the ignition on the right side of the steering column.
This is the moment of truth. As I turn the key, every single one of the artistic gauges in the car springs to life. An extremely audible beeping fills the entire car. I wait for it to stop. When the car ceases beeping, the time has come. I reach slowly for the red button. My heart is beating at an Olympic pace, and I feel as if I’m going to drop dead from the suspense, coupled with my excitement. There is sweat dripping down my forehead. I cannot believe that this is happening. I rest my finger on the button for only a moment, yet it feels like an eternity. The time has come. As I press the button, the V8 engine gurgles to life, loudly announcing its presence to everyone within half of a mile away. I gently press the gas pedal, and the engine wastes no time screaming with a force only an Italian supercar could muster. An insane and uncontrolled, yet refined and crisp note comes out of the exhaust, one that takes decades of racing pedigree, along with extreme expertise and passion in order to perfect and harness. I switch the car into “race” mode, which makes the car even louder, even at idle. This car is meant to gather as much attention as humanly possible, and it deserves it. Every single aspect of this car comes together to form one masterpiece, there is no need to inform the driver of this, it is something that is sensed the second you sit down. I look down at the two screens to the sides of the tachometer, just in time to see one unmistakable name, a name known by every ten-year-old boy in the civilized world. A name that fills their dreams, as they hope that one day they can touch, yet alone own something with this name written on it. I look down just in time to see the name made famous by the dreams of an Italian racing driver back in 1929: Ferrari.

This piece was inspired by my trip to the local Ferrari dealership where I was given the oppurtunity to sit in a 2013 Ferrari 458 Spyder, and was able to listen to it start up and rev.
