Playing Along
"Hahaha! That's so funny." Julia exclaimed. As she looked at an Instagram video on her friend Savannah's phone. They sat on Savannah's light pink couch eating popcorn and looking for funny dog videos.
"I know right!" Savannah wailed, "I'm bored, lets do something else."
"Okay." Julia responded, even though she really wanted to watch the cute dog videos.
"I know what we can do. We can get dressed up in the fabulous dresses I have in my closet, put some make-up on, and do our hair! Then we can have a photo shoot." Savannah suggested and ran to her walk in closet and pulled out some dresses. Savannah chose a precious peach-colored dress and Julia chose a sparkly light blue dress. They changed into them and twirled around.
Savannah then scurried to the bathroom, Julia behind her as usual. Savannah started using her hot pink eyelash curler and Julia wondered is she should be doing the same thing. Julia had never put on make-up before and she already felt butterflies in her stomach. She didn't want to embarrass herself in front of Savannah.
"Julia, can you pass me the mascara?"
"Yeah, sure." Julia looked around at all the different make-up sprawled around the white bathroom counter. What's mascara? She wondered. Mascara, mascara, mascara? "Umm I-"
"Nevermind, i'll get it." Savannah picked up a cylinder like bottle, screwed the top, and applied the mascara to her eyelashes. Julia was amazed at how long they got.
As Savannah kept applying make-up from all different bottles and all different palettes, Julia couldn't help to think she didn't fit in. She tried to follow along with what Savannah did.
After Savannah finished her make-up, she took a selfie and uploaded it to Instagram. Then she pulled out her metallic blue hair straightener and soon her blonde wavy locks were as straight as a line.
"Here, you can straigten your hair now." So Julia did and it didn't go to well. She burned her ear and it turned as red as a tomato. "I'll do it for you, so you won't get burned again."
After Julia's hair was straight they headed to the balcony to take pictures. Savannah lived in a large beach house and the view was breathtaking. It was 9:17 pm, the sky was as black as coal and the stars shined as if a toddler spilled a load of gold glitter on them. On the beach a family was having a barbecue and had a circle of torches around them. It was beautiful.
Savannah set her iPhone camera on a coffee table and made sure the timer was on. They did all sorts of poses and Savannah posted it on Instagram.
Savannah kept on taking more and more pictures and Julia didn't stop herr. She didn't like taking pictures, doing her hair, or putting on make-up. Yet, she was as quiet as a mouse. This is a common teenage problem.
"Savannah, i don't really want to do all this. I never did."
"Julia, you should've told me from the beginning, I don't bite you know."
The two girls headed inside and changed into more comfortable clothes. Julia wore light gray sweatpants, a black t-shirt with her school logo on it, and black Ugg slippers. Savannah wore spongebob pajama pants and a plain white t-shirt.
Julia sat on the light pink couch and thought about how easy it would've been if she just spoke out from the beginning. Surely they could've came up with something they both wanted to do.
Savannah joined Julia on the couch and brought a bag of pretzels. For the rest of the night they watched funny videos and played board games. Julia felt more comfortable around her best friend and she just had to speak her voice to do it.
"Want to take a selfie!?" asked Julia.
"You know it!" Savannah squealed. Click. "It looks great! I'm posting this on Instagram right now!" Julia looked at her best friend and smiled.
