You own everything that happened to you. Tell your stories. If people wanted you to write warmly about them, they should've behaved better. -Anne Lamott, from Bird by Bird: Some Instructions on Writing and Life.

I don't think you ever said you love me
I don't think I've heard those words before
Come to think of it it's kind of funny
How those words broke me when you locked the door

I'd whisper those words to my pillows
My breath would fog on the glass of my windows
But you never let me say them to your face
You always left before I had the chance to say

I love you but I'll never say the words
I love you but I'll say something worse
I'll say nothing if I can never say them first

Long ago you would tell me that I'm pretty
Now all I get is a passing nod
You'd get bored if it wasn't for complacency
But saying nothing feels odd

You use to tell me stories of pretty girls
Who only wanted you to say those three words
It's not like I'm so different from them
You just assumed I never felt the thirst

I love you but you'll never say the words
I love you but I'll say something worse
I'll say nothing if I can never say them first

Say anything, say you're done, say you're leaving
Say something if you can't say them at all
Say I'm pretty, say I'm smart
Say you're giving me your heart
If you say anything at least I'll know where I belong
If you say anything at least I'll know I wasn't wrong
For waiting, six hundred days

I don't know why I haven't said I love you
Snuck it in, in the middle of a conversation
But you always seem to know when I'm trying
You lock the door and hear me crying, why aren't you dying?

I love you but I can never say the words
I love you but I'll say something worse
I'll say nothing if I can never say them first
