You own everything that happened to you. Tell your stories. If people wanted you to write warmly about them, they should've behaved better. -Anne Lamott, from Bird by Bird: Some Instructions on Writing and Life.

four years out and I'm four years closer
four years now and I'm four years older
four years trying and I still can't get it right
look up the pretense study the answers
try to apply it but it's too thin to matter
four years of trying and I still can't get it right

three years ago I was one year in
three years of dying the color of my skin
four years of trying and I still can't get it right
do what they tell you and follow the guidelines
look at the studies and look at the signs
four years of trying and I still can't get it right

can't stand the taste
can't hide the crime
it's in your face
it's in the time
can't look away
can't look aside
it's in your face
it's in the tide

two years ago I was two years younger
two years ago I couldn't say the numbers
four years trying and I still can't get it right
practice at home in front of the mirror
fogging up the glass but it becomes a little clearer
four years of trying and I still can't get it right

one year ago I was almost this old
one year ago and I wasn't this cold
four years of trying and I still can't get it right
gather the flame to ignite the fire
light the whole village spark up the choir
four years of trying and I still can't get it right

can't stand the taste
can't hide the crime
it's in your face
it's in the time
can't look away
can't look aside
it's in your face
it's in the tide

its four years now and I'm four years closer
four years now and I'm four years older
four years trying and I still can't get it right
four years of listening, four years of biting my tongue
four years of dying, four years of fighting the one
four years timing and I still can't get it right

can't stand the taste
can't hide the crime
it's in your face
it's in the time
can't look away
can't look aside
it's in your face
it's in the tide

four years and I still can't say I love you
four years timing and I still can't get it right
