You own everything that happened to you. Tell your stories. If people wanted you to write warmly about them, they should've behaved better. -Anne Lamott, from Bird by Bird: Some Instructions on Writing and Life.

You asked her to dance and entwined your little hands
The waves crashing water on your toes upon the sand
As the day grew long and the sun began to set
She hooked her pinky with your pinky and said ‘let’s make a bet
If you don’t fall in love by the time you’re thirty two
Promise you’ll come back for me and I’ll fall in love with you’
School year after school year, you learned things you never knew
The more people you met, the more friends you made, the more things you began to do
The only time you saw her was in the halls when she stopped and stared
Whenever you thought of her, you wondered why she cared
Sitting in class one day, a little thought seems to occur
In that promise that you made, she never spoke of her
She said ’if you don’t fall in love’ but what about herself?
She was always waiting for you, like a doll upon a shelf
You ran out of school, to find her and a boy holding hands
She fell in love with him before you figured out the plan
You grew farther apart but held close the words that she used to say
And that promise that you made her on that late October day
