Underground Railroad
In the blistering sun, every step is pain,
Absorbing the heat, she yearns for rain.
Bent for months, the dirt kept stickin’
Cringing at the incessant “Keep on pickin’!”
After the sun began to fall through
There was talk of a daring rescue
A woman with skin as dark as night,
Tubman was the name, fighting to set the world right.
One moonless night, even the crickets were quiet.
The trees held their breath and all was silent.
A figure emerged, a shrouded buccaneer
Whispering to us that “Freedom is Here.”
We take the chance, we leave, we flee,
Under the brush, through the vigilant trees.
I hold my babe close, now no debt I owe
For now I am on the Underground Railroad.
